Dr. Smith has completed approximately 16 years of training after finishing high school. He is one of only approximately two dozen surgeons in the United States who has completed full fellowships in both Plastic Surgery and Facial Plastic Surgery. Dr. Smith is also one of only a small group of surgeons that has these four surgical board certifications. He is board Certified in Plastic Surgery, Facial Plastic Surgery*, Cosmetic Surgery*, and Ear, Nose, Throat – Head and Neck Surgery (Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery).

Upon graduating from medical school Dr. Smith began his residency training in Ear, Nose, and Throat, and Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch.  During his residency he was honored to serve as the President of the Texas-Medical Association – Resident Physicians. He also sat on the Texas Council of Medical Education, and served as president of the Medical Housestaff at his hospital. He received several honors for his research including best paper by the Southern Medical Society, best paper by the Texas Medical Society and second place in the National Medical Student research Forum.

in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Dr. Smith then completed a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Stanford University.  In 1994, he was privileged to receive the Jack Anderson award for scholastic excellence in facial plastic surgery.  This award is given only to the surgeon with the highest score in the United States on the facial plastic surgery board examination.  Dr. Smith also served as an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Stanford University.

After completing his tenure at Stanford University, Dr. Smith then completed yet another residency in Plastic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic.   In 2001 he received the award for the best paper in Aesthetic (Cosmetic) Surgery given by the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation.  This award is also given to only one resident surgeon each year

Dr Smith has continues to be honored by his medical colleagues for his excellent work and contributions to medical science. In 2008 Dr. Smith received the award for the best overall paper, from the California and Rocky Mountain Plastic Surgery Society for his work regarding rhinoplasty.    He also received the award for the best cosmetic paper of the entire year, 2008, from the American Society of Cosmetic Surgery for his work on breast augmentation.

Dr. Smith has served medical missions to Zimbabwe Africa and Venezuela. In each of these locations he taught the local physicians and operated on handicapped children. He has lectured nationally and internationally to other physicians on topics related to plastic surgery.  He has published many articles in medical journals and written chapters on surgery in some of more prestigious Surgical Textbooks.

Dr. Smith has also created a charitable non-profit organization which performs free surgery on children with deformities, and women requiring breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery.
